What are self-ligating braces?
Self-ligating braces look like fixed metal and clear braces do. Brackets are bonded to the front surface of your teeth and a thin archwire is threaded through the brackets to connect them. However, that is where the similarities end.
Fixed braces use elastic bands around the brackets which causes friction during treatment. This results in longer treatment times. These elastic bands aren’t needed with self-ligating braces. Instead, self-ligating brackets have a small clip mechanism which holds the archwire in place.
This gives the archwire slightly more freedom to respond to the movement of your teeth, making for a more tailor-made and comfortable treatment experience.
